Purchased 1 inch stir bar from Hoggetowne Ale Works. Tested stir plate out using cup of water. Either magnets are too strong for the small bar or the fan spins too quickly for the small bar (or, more likely, both).
Going to try a larger stir bar to see if that can solve the problem. Daniel also suggested using a resister to slow the fan down; not sure of the cost or feasibility of this but may explore following trial of larger stir bar.
Plan is to use stir bar for yeast culture for next batch.
